Weekend Boarding Activities

Ellesmere College weekend activities provide our boarders with an exciting mix of fun, social time, physical activity and new experiences. The College is a busy place and so we recognise the importance of giving pupils time to relax with their friends and try out new and exciting activities during the weekends.

At Ellesmere, we are fortunate to be situated within easy access of Manchester, Liverpool and Snowdonia National Park. Our location means that we have a rich variety of activities that we can access in the surrounding area.

Most trips take place on a Sunday so that there is no clash with sporting fixtures on a Saturday. Our trips aim to provide students with a real variety of choice, incorporating a mixture of physical activity, cultural visits and 'down time'.

.

Typical weekend trips for boarders include:

  • Manchester: Manchester is around an hour away from the College where we visit the Trafford Centre, which is one of the largest shopping centres in the UK. On trips to this site, students can shop, eat, go bowling or visit the cinema. There is also the opportunity to visit the Snowdome complex, where they can ski or snowboard or iFLY where students can try their hand at indoor skydiving!
  • Zip World: located in Snowdonia National Park, Zip World is a unique range of special adventures. Students can experience Europe's longest Zip line, massive underground trampolines or snake through the forest on the Fforest Rollercoaster!
Typical exeat trips include: (please note exeat trips are for boarders not going home during exeat weekends, places are therefore limited and for full boarders Year 9 and above only):
  • London: The UK's capital! We visit Madame Tussaud's for the best selfies with the stars. We drive through the city spotting famous landmarks before time on Oxford Street to eat and shop. Note, given the distance, this will be a full day - we depart before breakfast and return by 10pm.
  • York: A cultural visit to the medieval city of York, home of the famous Minster. We visit the Jorvik Viking Centre before free time to walk the city walls, explore the quaint narrow streets of the Shambles or visit the National Railway Museum. The annual St Nicholas Christmas Festival also opens this weekend.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know what activities are available?

Before the start of each term, a list of activities for that term will be sent to you. You can then select the activities that you would like to book via the College website or via a link which will be updated regularly.

How do I book my child onto weekend activities?

Details of the activities and costs are listed above - please use the link sent to you to book the activities. You may book a place for your child on as many of the trips as you choose! Please use a separate form for each child.

Please only book ONE activity per child per trip/day. If you have booked an activity but would also like time for your child to shop (where 'shopping only' is an option) then please be aware that there will be some shopping time available after the activity and you do not need to book 'shopping only' in addition to the booked activity.

All of our activities are extremely safe - we only ever use reputable companies and all trips are risk assessed. It is inevitable however, that some of our more adventurous activities will contain a small element of risk. Please be aware that by booking your child on to an activity you are providing your parental permission for them to take part. You can find links to all of the activity providers on the booking website if you feel you would like more information before making this decision.

What is the cost and how do I pay?

The cost of each trip varies. We have provided an approximate price for the trip on the Booking Page and above. By booking your child on to this experience, you are agreeing to have the cost of the trip added on to your termly bill.

Once a booking has been made it is non-refundable.

Please note that whilst the cost of the trip is approximate, we will always contact you should the cost be more than £10 above the price we have quoted. Wherever possible we will strive to deliver the trip at a cost equal to or lower than the one quoted.
