Boarding
Ellesmere College provides a friendly and warm environment with family values at its heart.
Students from many countries are all part of our boarding community, becoming fully involved in school life.
Our modern accommodation provides a high quality, comfortable and secure environment for our students, with residential staff on site to tend to the students' needs 24 hours a day.
There are a variety of rooms within the boarding house, the majority of which are single and twin, with en-suite options. Wi-Fi internet connection is available throughout the school. Our students also have access to a common room and TV lounge, which offer a comfortable and safe environment in which students can relax.
There is a close liaison between the boarding and teaching staff to ensure a continuity of care at all times.
Academic Choice
At Ellesmere College we believe it is not enough just to make sure that our students are successful at passing exams - important though this is - but that they also get the best of all that a British education can offer. We aim to provide subjects which appeal to all of our students' interests and academic strengths, while keeping class sizes small.
GCSE (Age 14-16 School Years 10-11)

Boarding Life
With many areas of the Boarding life at Ellesmere College being described as 'outstanding' it is no wonder many pupils choose to board here.
Ellesmere is progressive in its thinking and offers boarding based on age group (Junior, Middle and the Sixth Form). This allows boarders to grow and learn within larger friendship groups, share more experiences together and form life-long relationships.
Each House is run by an experienced Housemaster or Housemistress and, with the support of a strong pastoral team, offers a safe and friendly environment for the students to call 'home'. Fundamental to this is the relationship forged between the House and the Parent. We believe that an effective working relationship with clear and regular communication allows pupils to feel as though they have a strong, caring team around them.
Each House provides an opportunity for boarders to take on roles of responsibility and learn to become more independent, whilst developing the skills to work together as a team.
Ofsted: Boarding and Child Safety
The Boarding and Child Safety Inspection, which was conducted recently, involved 2 inspectors spending time in the College, a questionnaire to boarding parents, a questionnaire to students, formal group and individual meetings with students and visits to all the Boarding Houses.
Of the 6 categories the College was found to be good in 3 categories and outstanding in 3. The 3 outstanding categories were "helping children to be healthy", "helping children achieve well and enjoy what they do" and "helping children make a positive contribution".
It is by no means unheard of for Independent Schools to fail a Boarding and Child Safety Inspection so to achieve a Report with a mixture of "outstanding" and "good" is very pleasing.
The Boarding Houses
It is no wonder many pupils choose to board at Ellesmere College - be it full time or weekly - as the offering to the boarder has been classed as 'outstanding' in many areas! Ellesmere is progressive in its thinking and offers boarding based on age group (Junior, Middle and the Sixth Form)
This allows boarders to grow and learn within larger friendship groups, share more experiences together and form life-long relationships.

Catering
The College provides hot meals at breakfast, lunch and dinner, for all students, ensuring that they benefit from a nutritious and healthy diet every day, including weekends. Our large dining area is the social hub of the school and we make it our duty to ensure a variety of foods are served. In addition there are catering facilities within each boarding house.
Home from Home
From the day a child starts at Ellesmere College they are assigned to one of our boarding houses where Housemasters and Housemistresses support the younger and new students. Our long term experience with such a diverse community means that our staff are fully accustomed to welcoming students from overseas, helping them to settle in happily, and to quickly feel at ease with school life.
Within this rich mix of people, students come to see themselves as global citizens who enjoy getting to understand different cultures. Living together at Ellesmere, they engage with each other's language, food and traditions as part of their daily life. Events and projects that involve friendly competition between the Houses build bonds across the school years.
Weekly Boarding
Many boarding schools today offer a number of boarding options, but one option in particular is becoming increasingly popular with a large number of parents – weekly boarding - a helpful and viable alternative to, and a bridge between, the world of a day pupil and that of a full-boarder.
Ellesmere College is closer than you think, but if distance away from the school is a determining factor in the choice of a school, the option to weekly board offers parents a broader choice for their child as they can board during the week, and return home at the weekends, or part way through the week as desired.
See table below for distance in miles/time and the nearest Ellesmere College Bus Stop.
We are always flexible based on the needs of each child – be it weekly for geographical reasons, or ad-hoc here and there for academic or co-curricular commitments after school.
If a child weekly boards and usually goes home at the weekend but would like to stay for a fixture or a concert at the weekend, we can accommodate most requests!
This provides parents with a 'helping-hand', giving them their own flexibility not only in being able to successfully manage their work or personal commitments without the stress of baby-sitters or cost of nannies, but also to control the growth of independence of their child.
The child can then maintain a level of consistency, security and familiarity with their academic and co-curricular schedule during the week.
It is also a way to break into the field of full boarding perhaps during the Sixth Form years and can be easily aligned with College events and fixtures.
Why Board At Ellesmere?
With many areas of the Boarding life at Ellesmere College being so popular, it is no wonder many pupils choose to both weekly and full-board here. Ellesmere is progressive in its thinking and offers boarding based on age group from Yr. 9. This allows boarders to grow and learn within larger friendship groups, share more experiences together and form life-long relationships.

Set in 150 acres of rural Shropshire countryside near the small town of Ellesmere, the College has a range of Boarding Houses each providing an opportunity for boarders to take on roles of responsibility and learn to become more independent, whilst developing the skills to work together as a team.
Through this our pupils develop greater self esteem, which gives them more confidence; this is crucial as they are better prepared and ready for the next phases of their lives.
And last but not least … our boarders have fun! We are extremely proud of the range of exciting and meaningful activities we offer to our weekly and full-boarders - there is always something going on, from sport and drama, CCF and Duke of Edinburgh, a round of golf, games in the sports hall or working out in the gym or heated pool, evening debating groups, even taking part in twilight catch up lessons - not to mention the weekend shopping excursions and activity weekends!!
The Benefits of Weekly-Boarding
As described, there are many benefits of weekly-boarding for parents, but what does it offer the student?
Weekly boarding is a great introduction - a taster! - of what boarding is really like and gives children a chance to experience what life is like as a boarder as they move through the school. It also works really well to ready a child for the move from senior school to college or university where they often live away from home in halls of residence teaching them valuable lessons in independence and resilience in a safe, familiar and monitored environment.Quite often, it is the child who then initiates the next step in asking if they can weekly board as they grow older, more confident and need to spend more time with academic studies (sixth form for example), or if they are involved in after school co-curricular activities.
Ultimately, weekly boarding is an option in many boarding schools which is going from strength to strength and which many parents, students and staff have seen the benefits for all.
