School Hosts 21st Annual Jubili Orchestral Youth Summer Camp

As part of a busy summer of groups residing at the School, the Lower School building and surrounding area has been full of music and laughter, whilst a group of talented musicians from Lancashire returned to the School for the third year.

Jubili Orchestral Youth has been in existence for many years and the School was delighted to learn earlier this year that the Orchestra had decided to return to North Shropshire for their final event, choosing to reside again at the School before their founder and Music Director, Helen Davies conducts the Orchestras 21st Annual Concert in Accrington in the near future.

The Lower School and surrounding area has been alive with the sound of music as the 40-strong orchestra have played and rehearsed together. To the delight of other residents at the School, who have enjoyed listening to the music making, the good weather has permitted the playing in the outdoor classroom space, as well as enjoying the use of the sports facilities at the School during periods of relaxation. For the orchestral members aged between 11 and 23, off-site activities have included a visit to the Mere in Ellesmere and water-based activities at Lake Bala.

For one young talented cellist, who is also a chorister at Blackburn Cathedral and currently learning to play the organ, the opportunity presented itself to play the Schools 2 organs.  Sitting at the keyboard of the Schools grand Schulze Organ and under the watchful eye of a music teacher and fellow organ player and Old Ellesmerian, Paul Russell, William Fielding sight read and played I Vow to thee my Country and other pieces, to the delight of fellow Orchestra members and School staff.  Hazel Wakefield, from Ellesmere College explained, William, who is just 11 years old, went on to spend some time also playing the Chapel Organ and left announcing he would like to return to play both organs again. We would be delighted for him to do this in the future.

Helen Davies commented enthusiastically, For the past 3 years our young musicians have   enjoyed their stays at Ellesmere College, rehearsing together in the spacious Top Floor of Lower School and in the numerous classrooms available for the instrumental sessions. It has been a delight to return to our rural retreat and I thank the School for their welcome and support again this year.
