Gold for Ellesmere Students at British Shooting Schools Championships

The Regional Heats of the British Shooting Schools Northern Pistol Championships visited Ellesmere College for their inaugural event, which attracted 140 students. Competitors travelled from as far away as Northern Ireland, The Isle of Wight and the Norfolk Coast to compete in the event. Spectators filled the sports hall to watch athletes filter through the qualifying rounds into the finals in junior, intermediate and senior categories.

Despite the broad range of shooting abilities, head GB Coach Steve Pengelly indicated that the performances were of a very high standard. Ellesmere College shooters featured prominently in all classes, taking a clean sweep in the junior event, with the top three teams.

The winning team of James Caldwell, Francine Gilmore and Anna Maughan qualified for the National Finals, to be held at Stoke Mandeville in January. The winning team members also qualified for the regional individual final along with Zoe Lennox and James Caldwell, who finished 2nd, and Francine Gilmore, who finished 4th. In the intermediate category, Ellesmere College finished 2nd in the team event but sadly missed out on qualification for the national finals. In the senior event Shannon Davies qualified for the national final with Alan Bain and Abi Aspinall, who took Team Gold.
