Yesterday saw the arrival of 18 teams and many parents, family and friends descend on Ellesmere College for what is fast becoming a very popular and growing event. The U14 & U16 Rugby Tens tournament is an opportunity for teams in and around the North West to get some excellent competitive fixtures in, at a time in the year when the weather can hamper plans.
Director of Rugby, Alex Murphy, said, “As a College with very proud rugby traditions, we have been in that situation of not being able to play fixtures due to the elements being against us. We therefore decided to establish the Tens tournament a few years ago and it has proved to be a big success with both players and coaches alike. It allows for intensity of matches and player development, all done under the heading of a festival, where playing is more important than winning.”
The weather at Ellesmere allowed all four season to be on show, yet despite this, the atmosphere and quality of play was excellent. The tea and coffee tent was very popular and the camaraderie between the teams and sets of parents was an excellent advert for Club Rugby.
A huge thank-you must go to the referees, who due to the 4 match format every 20 minutes, were on pitch for 5 hours and did an excellent job.
Congratulations go to all the winners below, but a big thank you for everyone who turned up as the support of parents and team coaches willing to travel to play games enables events like this to thrive.
Alex Murphy commented, “Even before we got to the Semi and Final stages of the competition, a large number of the coaches had asked if they could put their names down for the 2019 tournament already. With more confirmations coming in this morning, the event continues to grow and we are very proud to support grass roots rugby at Ellesmere College along with our own Rugby Scholarship programme.”
