Ellesmere College

Ensembles and Choirs

Students have the opportunity to perform regularly in concerts, musical productions, chapel services, assemblies, open days and visits out of college in the community.

Students at Ellesmere College are encouraged to take part in a wide range of musical ensembles, with singing forming a particular strength of the department. Our long-standing and highly regarded choral tradition provides opportunities for students of all ages and abilities to develop their skills and perform regularly.

Chamber Choir and Chapel Choir (both award-winning) rehearse twice each week and perform frequently in chapel services, concerts, and competitions.

Lower School Choir rehearses weekly, exploring a broad and varied repertoire across many musical genres.

Musical Theatre Ensemble also meets weekly, bringing together singing, acting, and dance in performances staged in our theatre.

We offer students opportunities to take part in a variety of ensembles. Singing is an area of real excellence with a well-established choral tradition.

This inclusive approach ensures that every student is both supported and challenged appropriately, while providing outstanding preparation for university choral scholarships and future musical opportunities.

Ensembles and Choirs

Music is an integral part of life at Ellesmere College and we value the talent, enthusiasm and dedication displayed by all our students and supported generously by the wider community.

Alongside our award-winning choirs, Ellesmere College offers a diverse range of instrumental ensembles, providing every student with opportunities to perform, collaborate, and refine their musical skills. Students are encouraged to take part in multiple groups, allowing them to broaden their experience and enjoy making music in a variety of settings.

Our instrumental ensembles include:

  • Orchestra

  • Lower School Band

  • Woodwind Ensemble

  • Brass Ensemble

  • Flute Choir

  • Percussion Ensemble

  • String Ensemble

  • Jazz Band

Together, these ensembles create a vibrant and dynamic musical community where students of all abilities can thrive.

The music department is committed to working in the community and as such we have a long-established choral society open to all, conducted by the Director of Music. We have a community orchestra - Ellesmere Sinfonia - which is open to players of grade 5 standard and above. Both groups perform a variety of concerts each year, many raising money for charities such as Age UK, Hope House and Severn Hospice. We host a recital series each year that showcases the wonderful sounds of the Chapel Organ and the rare Schulze Organ in Big School.
