International Students
Ellesmere College is a fully co-educational school set in the beautiful English countryside. Founded in 1884, the school offers students between the ages of 7 to 18 the chance to achieve success in both their studies and a wide range of activities, including music, art, sport and drama, in a happy, friendly atmosphere.
Great Britain has a world-wide reputation for its high standards of education and here at Ellesmere College we support that tradition by concentrating on the academic and social needs of every student.
We prepare students for their GCSEs, A-Levels and the International Baccalaureate as well as giving them the opportunity to enjoy a full and varied sports and social programme.
Standing in its own stunning grounds covering more than 50 hectares, the school is conveniently located near the small, historic town of Ellesmere, and is less than 100 kilometres from both of England's second major cities, Manchester and Birmingham. This ideal location means students can benefit from the vast range of activities both cities have to offer whilst living and studying in a tranquil English country setting.
Academic Choice
At Ellesmere College we believe it is not enough just to make sure that our students are successful at passing exams - important though this is - but that they also get the best of all that a British education can offer. We aim to provide subjects which appeal to all of our students' interests and academic strengths, while keeping class sizes small.
Pre Sixth Course (Age 15+ School Year 11)
This is an intensive one year programme designed to prepare students from outside the UK for Sixth Form studies in both A-Level and the International Baccalaureate. The course includes five to six GSCE subjects which are taught in greater depth. Subjects include: One or two sciences (specialising in either Biology, Chemistry or Physics) English Language first language, Mathematics, Geography and a language, either first and native language such as German, or if already competent in a second language such as French, Spanish or Latin. All will also study English Literature and for a student with a high level of English on joining us there is the opportunity to take the IGCSE in English Literature in addition, this will be discussed with the individual once they have completed the first term of study.

Students should be aware that the British electricity system is 230 volts, and that the College wiring system requires that British Standard three pin fused plugs are used at all times. Travel adaptors are not to be used. Where possible all electrical equipment used should be CE and/or BS kitemarked and be fit for purpose. For laptops and mobile phones, students should contact the manufacturer directly to request a lead/charger that is compatible with British standards. Electrical adapters must also conform to British standards. Students must not purchase cheaper alternative extension leads and chargers online. Any electrical items, adapters and leads that are deemed not safe for use in the UK will be confiscated by the House Master and returned to you when you leave. For smaller items such as hairdryers and straighteners it is recommended that these are purchased on arrival in the UK; however, if this is not possible, the items should be compatible with British standards. Rice cookers, portable cooking equipment and kettles are NOT to be brought into the College. Additional heaters, if required, can be provided by the College. No electrical fairy/Christmas lights are to be used. The College tests all electrical appliances on an annual basis and reserves the right to prohibit the use of non-compliant items.

Accommodation
Ellesmere College provides a friendly and warm environment with family values at its heart. Students from many countries are all part of our boarding community, becoming fully involved in school life. Our modern accommodation provides a high quality, comfortable and secure environment for our students, with residential staff on site to tend to the students' needs 24 hours a day.
There is a close liaison between the boarding and teaching staff to ensure a continuity of care at all times. There are a variety of rooms within the boarding house, the majority of which are single and twin, with en-suite options. Wi-Fi internet connection is available throughout the school. Our students also have access to a common room and TV lounge, which offer a comfortable and safe environment in which students can relax.
Home from Home
From the day a child starts at Ellesmere College they are assigned to one of our boarding houses where Housemasters and Housemistresses support the younger and new students. Our long term experience with such a diverse community means that our staff are fully accustomed to welcoming students from overseas, helping them to settle in happily, and to quickly feel at ease with school life.
Within this rich mix of people, students come to see themselves as global citizens who enjoy getting to understand different cultures. Living together at Ellesmere, they engage with each other's language, food and traditions as part of their daily life. Events and projects that involve friendly competition between the Houses build bonds across the school years.
Catering
The College provides hot meals at breakfast, lunch and dinner, for all students, ensuring that they benefit from a nutritious and healthy diet every day, including weekends. Our large dining area is the social hub of the school and we make it our duty to ensure a variety of foods are served. In addition there are catering facilities within each boarding house.
Please contact us for more information on: registrar@ellesmere.com
English Language Support
Our aim at Ellesmere College is to make sure that international students learn far more than the ability to communicate in English. Specialist teachers offer a variety of individual programmes to help every student develop a depth of understanding, enabling each to get the most from their studies.
English as an Additional language (EAL)
Our specially-trained teachers work closely with students who need to increase their English level as quickly as possible. Each student is supported with classes in small groups to develop their English speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. For some students, this means small group sessions are offered instead of some mainstream lessons if staff believe it will be of greater benefit.
International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
IELTS is the preferred English language qualification of all UK universities. In Years 12 and 13 students have group and one-to-one tuition to prepare them for the exam. In order to study the International Baccalaureate at Ellesmere College, a strong IELTS score across all areas is the minimum standard needed with the same requirement for A-Levels. (All IELTS scores must relate to the Academic IELTS testing).
Please contact us for more specific information on: registrar@ellesmere.com
Guardianship
Every student with a parent who lives overseas must have an adult guardian in the UK who is responsible for them during their studies at Ellesmere and it is the parents’ responsibility to find a suitable guardian for their child.
A guardian could be a relative, friend of the family or a guardian agency and must be a minimum of 25 years old and not in full time education.
It is essential that guardians are nominated before starting to study at Ellesmere, and that we are advised of the name and contact details of the guardian prior to the start of term.
Social Programmes
We recognise that building a sense of community and family within Ellesmere College is important to our students, especially as the school is their "home away from home". We encourage students to develop their social skills and build self confidence.
Excursions and Events
At Ellesmere College we believe that school events and trips are vitally important in the all-round education of our students. We regularly take advantage of the stunning backdrop that our local area provides with visits to nearby towns and cities, both for study and leisure. Our teachers and staff are all committed to strengthening our sense of community, embracing the international heritage of our students who come from many countries. School trips abroad are organised to complement our local outings, helping to create a wider understanding of the world.

Student Support
House Mentors
Sixth Form students are selected as Prefects by staff to represent all our pupils. One of the Prefect's many roles is to help younger or newer students settle in to school life and help with any day to day problems or questions. Selected by the School on their leadership skills this role is ideal for those who want to take on extra responsibility and provide themselves with opportunities which will support their university applications. Head Boy and Head Girl positions are also elected in this way.
Personal Tutors
All students are assigned a personal tutor who is responsible for the academic and social welfare of a particular class. When students have to make academic choices at GCSE, A-Level, IB or for University entrance, they each get individual support and advice from our University Entrance Team. The teachers and staff are always on hand to discuss and advise pupils on any problems or questions they may have.
Student Welfare
Housemasters, Housemistresses and Tutors are responsible for each student's pastoral care. A school nurse looks after our pupils' medical needs. In the event of a more serious medical or dental problem the nurse will arrange for the student to see a doctor or be taken to a hospital.

We have retained Sable’s services to ensure all UK immigration applications are prepared in compliance with UKVI requirements. https://www.sableinternational.com/uk-education-corporate-services
Most students will need a visa to study at Ellesmere College except for British and Irish nationals and those who have a (Pre)-settled status. You can check if you need a UK visa here.
There are two types of visas:
Ellesmere can sponsor students under both the Child Student and Student visa routes.
Our Admissions team will be able to inform you which is the correct visa for you but if you are unsure of your visa requirements, the UK government website has more detailed information.
-------------------
HOW TO APPLY FOR A UK STUDENT VISA
The earliest you can apply for a visa is 6 months before you start your course.
You will need to send the following documents to the College/Sable Internation before applying for the visa:
· A scan of the photo page of your passport
· A scan of your birth certificate (and its official translation - no exceptions)
· A scan of your most recent school transcript (and its official translation - no exceptions). For the visa application, provisional results or mock Exams results are not accepted.
· A scan of the parents’ consent letter (please download, print, sign, scan and send)
· As a general rule, you must be no older than 17 years old on your first day on starting at Ellesmere College.
-------------------
TRANSLATIONS (HIGHLY IMPORTANT)
If any document you are required to submit is not in English, e.g. your birth certificate, school transcript/record you must have it translated officially by a legal translator. A lot of visas are rejected when this is ignored.
(Please note Chinese birth certificates must be translated).
-------------------
FINANCIAL EVIDENCE
Depending on where you are from, you will have to show evidence of sufficient funds to pay for the course fees for the first academic year. This information can be found in the Financial Statement sent to your family.
Some countries do not have to meet this requirement: See list of countries which do not need to show this evidence. Even if your country is not on this list, we still highly recommend that you pay the fees for the first year in advance. This will make the visa process go smoothly.
If you have a partial scholarship, you will have to show financial evidence of the portion not covered by the award.
If you choose to submit bank statements or certificate of deposit, there are many requirements to meet.
IMPORTANT: If you are going to pay the first year fees in advance, please do so at the time of sending the documents to the College to avoid delays.
-------------------
VISA FEES
It currently costs £490 to apply for a Student visa from outside the UK. (correct at time of writing)
-------------------
IMMIGRATION HEALTHCARE SURCHARGE (IHS)
ALL STUDENTS have to pay for this, please find more information here. Even if you are under 18 years old, you will need to pay for this in order to apply. This will be entitled to free NHS hospital treatment in the UK on the same basis as an ordinarily resident person. This will apply from the date your visa is granted until it expires.
The fee is £470 per-person for every twelve months of visa. The IHS fee is calculated on the overall length of time of your visa.
Whilst issuing Student visas the Home Office usually adds an extra period at the end of your visa. This additional period varies between 7 days to 4 months, depending on the overall duration of the course. The IHS fee for this additional period (7 days to 4 months) is £235. For example, if you are applying to study a 12-month Master’s course, you will get a visa for 16 months and you will be required to pay a total of £705 as IHS fee (£470 for 12 months + £235 for the additional 4 months).
You can use the calculator on the Gov.UK website to find out how much you will need to pay:

-------------------
TUBERCULOSIS (TB) SCREENING
Prior to making your visa application, students from certain countries are required to obtain a clear Tuberculosis Screening Test result. Please see the following website https://www.gov.uk/tb-test-visa/countries-where-you-need-a-tb-test-to-enter-the-uk and follow information for your home country.
If you need this test, you must get it from a clinic which is on the UK Visas and Immigration Authority’s list of approved TB Testing Clinics.
Please see the following website https://www.gov.uk/tb-test-visa/countries-where-you-need-a-tb-test-to-enter-the-uk and follow information for your home country.
-------------------
BIOMETRICS
As part of your visa application, you are required to provide your biometric information (fingerprints and facial image). Your visa application will not be processed until you have provided the necessary biometric information.
EU/EEA students can download an application to complete this. Search ‘UK Immigration: ID Check’ in your App store. Please notice the app will not work until you have started an application on GOV.UK.
Nationals of certain countries can do this online. You will be told what you need to do when you apply. You may have to go to the nearest visa application centre for this.
-------------------
CREDIBILITY INTERVIEWS
As part of your visa application, you may be requested to attend a short video interview with the Home Office. The purpose of the interview is to check that the applicant is a genuine student, so they may ask you some questions about your course, why you chose to study it, etc.
------------------
HIGHLY IMPORTANT: always check your junk inbox as Home Office emails may end up there. Many visas have been rejected because of lack of response.
You can ask to withdraw your application by contacting UKVI. Your fee will only be refunded if UKVI has not started processing your application.
-------------------
AFTER YOU GET A DECISION
EU/EEA students: if you used the ‘UK Immigration- ID Check’ app, you will get a digital immigration status which you can view and prove online . Please send it to admissions@ellesmere.com as soon as possible.
Students from the rest of the world: you will get your passport back with a vignette (sticker) and a letter which you will need to have at arrival.

How do you get your BRP?
It will not be sent to your address, it will be sent to Ellesmere College.

ELLESMERE COLLEGE...
