Success at Ellesmere is always measured by personal best and never against any predefined target.
Pupils have the opportunity to study from a wide range of GCSE subjects and therefore are able to follow their own pathways, with the ongoing support and guidance from the teaching staff.

GCSE 2024 News
Ellesmere College students are celebrating their excellent GCSE successes. The results published today saw an 89% pass rate, well above the UK pass rate of 67%, with 28% of grades in the top 9-7 range (A*/A). There were some particularly notable performances, as listed below, with many in the top band level of 9's and 8's (equivalent to A*/A).
Natt (Phuket) swept the board having achieved a total of ten level 9’s in all subjects and she completed A level Mathematics with an A* - an impressive performance! Natt completed three of her GCSE’s early, gaining a 9 in Maths in Year 9 and two more 9's in Further Maths and Chemistry, in Year 10, leaving room in her timetable for her to pursue A level Maths in Year 11.
Bella (Ellesmere, Shropshire) [Pictured] achieved seven level 9’s and two level 8’s.
Marco (Tai Po) gained seven 9’s including Further Maths, three level 8’s and a 7.
Alex (Chester) secured six level 8’s, with a 7 and 6 alongside a Distinction in Engineering Design.
Ewan (Poynton Green, Shropshire) gained five level 9’s, three 8’s and a 7.
Punn (Bangkhen) achieved five level 9 (including Maths completed in Year 10), three 8’s and a Distinction in Engineering Design.
Finn (Bulkeley, Cheshire) gained four level 9’s, two level 8’s, two level 7’s and a 6.
Theo (Baddiley, Cheshire) combined a busy rugby schedule with his GCSE studies. He gained a level 9, three 8’s, one 7, three 6’s and a 5. Theo has been playing in the U18’s as part of Sale Shark Rugby academy and captained the Sale squad at the recent tournament at Marlborough and gaining 'Player of the Season' at Chester Rugby Club.
Many of the current students are now looking forward to returning to the College in September to continue their academic journey into Sixth Form and study their choice of A Levels, International Baccalaureate (IB) or BTEC Sport course for the next two years.
This follows on from last week's excellent A level results and destinations, which saw students celebrating a 96% pass rate at A level, with some outstanding individual performances and students securing places at top universities across the UK and overseas.

GCSE 2023 News
Ellesmere College students are today celebrating their GCSE results with an overall pass rate of 80% with some outstanding performances!
The 2023 results are well above the UK pass rate (of 67%) and 25% of grades are the top 9-7 range (A*/A) - above the UK top range rate of 20%.
Top performing students include:
- Shinil Balakrishnan, from Chester, who achieved seven 9s and three 8s;
- Joshua Norris, from Ellesmere, has achieved five 9s, three 8s and a 6;
- Isobel Cripps, from Shrewsbury, got two 9s, six 8s and a 7;
- James Gannicott chose to move from his hometown of Zug in Switzerland to study at Ellesmere, he achieved one 9, seven 8s, one 7 and a 6.
Many of the students who picked up their GCSE results today will return to Ellesmere College in September to continue their academic journey into Sixth Form and study their choice of A Levels, International Baccalaureate (IB) or BTEC courses for the next two years.
A number of younger pupils sat a GCSE mathematics exam early at Ellesmere College too. Natt Kritchanarat completed her GCSE Mathematics last year with a grade 9 and has completed GCSE Chemistry and Further Mathematics this year at the end of her year 10, achieving a 9 in both subjects. She is now studying A level mathematics and will sit her A level at the end of Year 11.

With disruption to their education during the pandemic their achievements are even more impressive. Their results today have been hard earned. The GCSE results follow on from last week's excellent A level results and destinations, which include places at Girton College, Cambridge, Trinity College, Dublin, University of Birmingham, Bath, Durham, Exeter, Glasgow, Swansea, and as far afield as Maimi and Ohio USA.

Ellesmere College students are celebrating their GCSE results. The results published today saw a 90% pass rate with 30% of grades in the top 9-7 range (A*/A)
There were some particularly notable performances, as listed below, where the majority of their grades are out of nine, and in some cases ten GCSE's were taken, and these were in the top level 9's and 8's (equivalent to A*/A)
- · Cameron Davies (Wrexham) four 9's and two 8's,
- · Oscar Dodds (St. Helier) two 9's and five 8',
- · Wendy Tam (Shrewsbury) four 9's and three 8's,
- · Ewan Tulloch (Llanymynech) three 9's and four 8's
Many of the current students are now looking forward to returning back to the College in September to continue their academic journey into Sixth Form and study their choice of A Levels, International Baccalaureate (IB) or BTEC courses for the next two years.
A number of younger pupils sat a GCSE early in mathematics and a range of languages. The youngest of the early year entrants, Natt Kritchanarat, currently in year 9 completed her GCSE Mathematics and was delighted to achieve a top score with a level 9, she will go on to study A level mathematics through year 10 and 11.
GCSE 2021 News
Ellesmere College students are celebrating their GCSE results after a second challenging year for students through the whole country. In a very pleasing conclusion to the year, Ellesmere College saw 56% of grades in the top 9-7 range (A*/A) - well above the national average of 28.9% - and a 95% pass rate overall. The results this year – as with the A Levels and BTEC - are testament to how well our students and teaching staff have coped and adapted to increased levels of uncertainty, new methods of teaching, remote learning and self-management of their learning and teaching schedules.
There were some particularly notable performances in achieving multiple level 9's (equivalent to A*) and many more with a number of level 9-7 (A*/A) in their results tally and these included:
- Aditi Chezhian (Chirk ) ten level 9's (A*)
- Alex Norris (Ellesmere) nine level 9's (A*)
- Carmen Kilgannon (Ellesmere) eight level 9's and two level 8's
- Huw Lloyd (Overton-on-Dee ) eight level 9's and two level 8's
- Tessa O'Brien (Llangollen) eight level 9's and one level 8
GCSE 2020 News
Ellesmere College students are celebrating their results that have been confirmed after the welcomed reversal of the government decision regarding centre assessed grades. The GCSE results published today saw 94% pass rate with 46% of grades in the top 9-7 range (A*/A).
There were some particularly impressive performances in the 9/8 (A*/A) band. Pupils hailing from Ellesmere, Nantwich, Chester, Wilkesley, and further afield in Kyiv were top performers being awarded all or the majority of grades at 9/8.

Almost half of the GCSE grades achieved by Ellesmere College pupils were in the A* to B (9-6) range, and a third were A* to A (9-7), which is very pleasing when compared to national picture which stands at 21.9% (9-7), with some stand-out performances at level 9-7 (A*/A):
- Kezia Hutchings, from Kinnerley, achieved ten 9/8 grades (A*/A).
- Emily Ashley, from Wem, and Alanah O'Brien, from Llangollen, were awarded nine 9/8 grades and a 7 (A*/A).
- Dorian Puzovic, from Shrewsbury, gained eight 9/8 grades plus a 7 (A*/A).
- Rory Smith, from Oswestry, achieved seven 9/8 grades and two 7s (A*/A).
- Kizzy Lumley-Edwards, from Whittington, gained six 9/8 grades and three 7s (A*/A).
- Maddie Free-Carmichael, from Worthenbury, was awarded five 9/8 grades and four 7s (A*/A).
- Carol Shi, from Shenyang in China, only joined Ellesmere College in September 2018 to pursue the one year pre-6th International course and managed to achieve six 9/8 grades (A*/A).
