Ellesmere College CCF Easter Camp 2026 🏔️

On Saturday 21st March, twelve Ellesmere College CCF cadets set off for Easter Camp, this year heading to Dundonnell in the far northwest of Scotland, for a week-long introduction to mountaineering.

Now in its sixth decade, this historic camp is designed to develop character through challenge, exposing cadets to demanding environments and new experiences. From the outset, the journey north and preparation for the week set the tone for personal growth.

On arrival, cadets were welcomed with a hearty Scottish broth and homemade bread rolls, prepared by Dave, our College Chief, who has supported more than twenty Easter Camps. After dinner, cadets were issued technical equipment and introduced to crampon fitting, ready for their first day on the mountain.

Day one saw all groups tackling the iconic An Teallach, where patches of snow provided the perfect setting to practise ice axe and crampon skills. There was plenty of enjoyment, especially sliding down slopes while practising ice axe arrests, but the importance of these skills was well understood. As the day progressed, changing weather conditions highlighted just how quickly the mountain environment can shift, reinforcing the need for strong decision-making and communication.

The following days brought a mix of conditions, from full winter landscapes to driving rain and high winds. Each challenge emphasised the importance of preparation, resilience, and teamwork. Evenings back at base were boosted by Dave’s legendary homemade cakes, always a highlight.

The final phase of the camp was a three-day expedition. Groups travelled to different regions, from the Cairngorms to Sutherland, staying in remote bothies. Cadets planned and shopped for their own food, carefully packing everything needed for two nights in winter conditions. It was a demanding but rewarding experience, pushing everyone out of their comfort zones and reinforcing independence and self-reliance.

The week concluded with a celebratory dinner on Friday evening, recognising the achievements of all involved, before the long journey back on Saturday, just in time for a well-earned Easter break.
