A Triumphant Evening of Music: Ellesmere’s Last Night of the Proms Concert Raises the Roof

Ellesmere College launched its musical calendar in spectacular style on Saturday 4th October with the first major concert of the academic year — a rousing Last Night of the Proms-inspired celebration held in the historic Big School.

The evening brought together a rich blend of classical grandeur and contemporary flair, delighting a packed audience with a programme that honoured British musical tradition while showcasing the vibrant talent of Ellesmere’s young performers.

The concert opened with stirring renditions of patriotic favourites, including Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance, Henry Wood’s Sea Songs, and Handel’s Zadok the Priest, culminating in a powerful performance of the Hallelujah Chorus. These timeless pieces were brought to life by the combined forces of the Shrewsbury Light Orchestra, under the baton of Peter Road Night, and the College’s own Chapel and Chamber Choirs, led by Director of Music, Tony Coupe.

Adding a modern twist, the choirs captivated the audience with heartfelt performances of Coldplay’s “Fix You” and a dynamic medley from The Greatest Showman, which had the audience singing along and waving flags in true Proms fashion.

The evening was not only a musical triumph but also a celebration of community and generosity. All proceeds from the event went towards the Ellesmere Music School Appeal, supporting the continued growth and excellence of the College’s music programme.

Speaking after the concert, Mr Coupe said:
“It was a joy to see our students perform with such passion and professionalism. The energy in the room was electric, and the support from the audience was truly heartwarming. This event is a testament to the power of music to bring people together.”

Ellesmere College extends its heartfelt thanks to all performers, staff, families, and guests who made the evening such a memorable success.
