Examination Results 2015

Students at Ellesmere College Sixth Form achieved another great crop of results and celebrated their A level success. Overall performance saw 98.9% pass rate including quite a number of outstanding performances. Nearly 60% of all grades awarded to Ellesmere students were in the top A*/B grades with the girls raising that bar to nearly 70% of their grades published being in A*AB and a 100% pass rate.

Whilst heartfelt congratulations go to all our students there were several particularly notable performances that are worthy of specific mention.

The Ellesmere supply of medics each year remains constant with Nina Handzewniak, Head Girl and Academic Scholar, achieving 4A* grades in Biology, Maths, Chemistry and Physics to read Medicine at Oxford, Joe Hughes (Ellesmere, Shropshire) has secured his place to read Medicine at the University of Sheffield with 3A grades, Hannah Miles (Overton, Wrexham) completed 4 A levels and achieved A*AAB to read Medicine at the University of Birmingham and Migle Kocyte secured AAB and she will be pursuing Biomedical Science at King's College, London.

The range of degree courses that Ellesmere students choose to pursue is a reflection of the many interests and opportunities they experience at the College. From Economics to Engineering to Fine Art and Classics, here are just a few examples: Luke Caldecott (Marford, Wrexham) achieved AAA and a place to read Economics with Political Science at Birmingham; Cassie Champrasit, AAB will read Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art. Patrick O'Brien (Llangollen) secured a place to read Chemical Engineering at Nottingham with AAA, Bobby Orr (Ellesmere, Shropshire)will read History at Exeter having achieved 4 A levels, 2A*'s and 2 A grades, Beatrice Quinton gained A*AA to read Classics at UCL and Illya Zalessky achieved AAB and will read Chemistry at Birmingham.

The A level results follow on from those that IB students received earlier in the summer. The diploma pass level of 24 points is given the equivalent value of BCC grades at A Level. Well over half of the cohort (58%) achieved more than 30 points, which is equivalent of A*AA grades at A Level. Michal Zarzecki achieved the outstanding score of 43, which is only 2 points short of the 45 available that is only awarded to approximately 100 candidates across the world. 43 points equates to 4.8 A* grades at A level. Michal has a place to read Medicine.

Always keen to develop new courses that serve students career aspirations, Ellesmere College recently introduced another course into the sixth form, the BTEC Sport (Performance and Excellence) to run alongside A level and IB. This two year course was introduced in September 2013 and the first results were published this summer with 100% pass rate and all students achieving either a Distinction or Merit award. Charlie Scott and Oliver Bohn achieved the highest level of double distinction, equivalent to AA at A level. Most opted to combine this double A level standard course with a second separate A level.

Mr Brendan Wignall, Headmaster, said "It is always a pleasure to see our students continue to secure impressive grades such as these and all who wish to progress to university being able to do so. I congratulate our A level, IB and BTEC students on their achievements All our students completing their studies with us deserve this success. Credit must also go to the excellent work of our teaching staff and of course to parents for their constant support and encouragement."
