Sixth Form: International Baccalaureate

At present there are just under 200 boys and girls studying from a range of more than 20 subjects. Most will go on to University with increasing numbers taking a GAP year to widen experience of the world.

We believe it important that students be allowed every opportunity to express their own views and develop ideas in sixth form classes and seminars.

A range of subjects are available at A level or students may choose to pursue their advanced studies through the IB Diploma.

The College has been approved to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma since September 2006. This follows a rigorous application process and an inspection visit by a team from Geneva. The Diploma programme runs alongside A levels and offers an alternative to the traditional A level programme.

The IB is particularly suitable for more able students. It is a more demanding course than A levels, but is recognised as such by universities: the UCAS tariff equates the top grade in the IB (45 points) as equivalent to a little under 6½ A grades at A level.

The IB Diploma represents a broader educational approach than traditional A levels and is examined very differently from modular A levels. A level students can take modular exams in the January and will always take them in the summer of their first year. They complete AS at the end of the first year in the sixth form and then go onto finalise the full A level by taking further examinations in the January and the summer of their second year. The assessment of the IB Diploma is based on examinations at the end of the two year and a dissertation. Six subjects, rather than four, are studied at IB and students also follow a theory of knowledge course and the CAS, Creative, Active and Service core.
